Before Surgery
When your procedure is scheduled, please inform your physician about any medications you take on a regular basis, including aspirin and coumadin. Ask whether you will need to stop taking any of your medications prior to your endoscopy, and if so ask how far ahead of the scheduled procedure date you will need to stop them. Please remember to call your doctor if there is any change in your physical condition before your procedure.
Please call even if it seems to be a minor sore throat or cold. The day before surgery, call the Center to confirm your arrival time and ask any last minute questions that you may have.
The Day of Your Procedure
You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after the procedure, so please arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home.
• DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT. DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING BEGINNING 4 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL TIME.
This includes gum, hard candy or water, unless you are given specific instructions by your doctor.
• Take your usual blood pressure and cardiac medications with a sip of water unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to get into after your procedure.
• All valuables should be left at home.
• Make sure you finish the prep as ordered by your doctor, or your procedure may be cancelled. • Remove contact lenses and make-up before coming to the Center.
After Your Endoscopy
You will be closely monitored by our professional staff after your procedure, until you are ready to leave. When you are able to move about, a family member or friend is welcome to sit with you. You will be discharged with written instructions prepared by your physician.
For the First 24 Hours After Your Endoscopy
You may feel fine, but this is the time to allow a responsible adult to take care of you.
• DO NOT drive or operate machinery.
• DO NOT drink alcohol.
• Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
• If you have any questions, call your physician.
• We will call you at home in a few days to see how you are feeling.
